Director of Annual Giving–FISK UNIVERSITY  (Nashville, Tennessee)

POSITION SUMMARY
This position requires a bachelor’s degree (an advanced degree is preferred) and at least five years of relevant experience in fundraising/development. Excellent verbal and interpersonal skills are required, as is a high degree of initiative. Experience using Raiser’s Edge preferred. CFRE or CFRM certification is a plus. This position requires frequent travel, including overnight; and working long and irregular hours, as needed.

The Director of Annual Giving must be a disciplined self-starter who regularly sets and achieves work goals; is a highly motivated individual who is able to work independently and function as a key member of the University’s development team; able to manage multiple responsibilities; and possesses flexibility and the ability to work under stress to meet deadlines. This is a full-time, twelve month position and the individual reports directly to the Vice President for Institutional Advancement.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The Director of Annual Giving identifies and cultivates a portfolio of 150-200 gifts prospects/donors in support of THE FISK FUND. He/She is responsible for managing relationships with approximately prospective donors and is expected to identify, qualify, cultivate, solicit and steward these very important alumni and friends of the College. He/She plans, develops and/or executes a strategic plan to attain the unrestricted gift goal of THE FISK FUND each year.

The Director of Annual Giving oversees THE FISK FUND, which includes its steering committee, the phonathon program, faculty/staff campaign, senior class gift campaign, Friends for Fisk, Religious Leaders for Fisk, and never givers campaign. He/She develops a coordinated matrix of communication and solicitation strategies involving email, social media, direct mail, telephone, personal visitation and volunteer engagement, all focused on shaping a sustainable tradition of annual support.

The director provides strategic direction and long-range/short-term planning for all these areas in the context of growing the Annual Giving Program while supporting the greater development and campaign goals of the Office of Institutional Advancement and Fisk University. He/She interfaces with the Director of Alumni Affairs to ensure that the class agent/reunion giving and alumni giving campaigns are coordinated and to engage the Director of Alumni Affairs, as needed. The Director is responsible for ensuring that the College is a leader among peers as measured externally in terms of total dollars, participation percentage of constituencies, consistency of giving and average gift size, and internally in terms of clean data, ease of access to data and timely donor stewardship.

Key responsibilities follow.
* Maintain a portfolio of 150 – 250 prospects using a focused and accountable approach of strategy development and implementation.
* Meet both annual giving and major gift objectives for each of the prospects under direct management.
* Implement cultivation, solicitation and stewardship for each of the prospects under direct management.
* Engage assigned prospects in the life, mission and priorities of the University.
* Attain 160 – 240 substantive moves per year by identifying, qualifying, cultivating and soliciting. A minimum of two days a week should be spent out of the office in this process.
* Increase the pool of annual gift prospects by identifying new corporate, foundation and individual prospects.
* Prepare proposals and solicitation materials as required. Initiate and strengthen relationships with donors including the creation of individual plans for donors.
* Develop cultivation and solicitation strategies in consultation with the Vice President and/or other identified persons; documents contacts and solicitation plans.
* Manage volunteer leaders as assigned.
* Prepare all call reports and briefings in a timely manner and submit a weekly report showing progress and activity.

The Director of Annual Giving oversees the general operations of the phonathon activity, including supervising callers, establishing calling schedules, and ensuring that calls are conducted properly. He/She trains all student callers, ensures proper attendance and high caller performance through monitoring and counseling. She/He has the discretion to terminate the utilization of any student as necessary; reviews and revises recruiting techniques to promote committed student callers. He/She generates daily and weekly reports, analyzes progress, adjusts strategies as needed and initiates any report that better communicates the effectiveness of the phonathon activity.

The Director of Annual Giving works collaboratively with and in support of volunteers, other development and advancement staff, and other University representatives to cultivate and solicit donors for University-wide priorities. He/She recommends and assists with programming involving the President, Vice President for Institutional Advancement, other institutional advancement staff, other vice presidents and campus leaders, faculty, and campaign volunteer leaders, and monitors all prospect contacts to ensure positive and purposeful prospect and donor relations.

The Director of Annual Giving attends all assigned meetings, unless excused to travel. He/She participates in a variety of donor cultivation programs, activities, and events, and fulfills other responsibilities as needed or assigned by the vice president for institutional advancement.
