JOB DESCRIPTION: Winston-Salem State University invites applications for a dynamic leader for the position of Assistant Dean for Academic Advising Services, University College and Lifelong Learning (UCaLL). The Assistant Dean will report to the Associate Provost and Dean for University College and Lifelong Learning and is responsible for the leadership of the academic advising programs and related services which facilitate students’ successful matriculation and retention. The Assistant Dean provides leadership to a staff who plans and implements the academic advisement programs and services for all pre-majors of the University. The Assistant Dean will also collaboratively work with the UCaLL leadership team and other appropriate faculty and staff. They will ensure that necessary resources are in place to provide and assess effective advising services which will enhance the retention and ultimate graduation of students. In addition, the Assistant Dean will work with the Associate Provost and Dean of University College and Lifelong Learning to ensure that the strategic initiatives of the Division are successfully implemented.

COMPETENCIES: Responsible for the strategic oversight and ongoing development and delivery of the University’s advising system for all undergraduate students;

Responsible for the development, enhancement, and implementation of a comprehensive plan for academic advising, grounded in best practices and research;

Develops, enhances, and implements regularly scheduled and on-going training programs for Academic Success Counselors, faculty advisors and peer mentors;

Works closely with department chairs, faculty advisors and administrators to enhance advising relationships with students;

Provides timely and appropriate academic advising/interventions for at-risk students, especially those who are on academic probation and/or have been suspended/reinstated to the university;

Participates in new student orientations to ensure that all incoming undergraduate students are fully informed about curriculum requirements and expectations;

Identifies and recommends new program initiatives and opportunities to strengthen and expand current advising processes;

Works closely with University constituents to ensure that Lifelong Learning advising programs and services are consistent with and closely integrated with the University’s strategic plan and academic mission;

Provides leadership to ensure that the strategic initiatives of the Division are being successfully implemented;

Works closely with faculty and administration on measures to advance the excellence and impact of University College and Lifelong Learning programs.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Terminal degree related to Leadership, Advising, or any related field

At least four (4) years demonstrated ability and experience in leading the effective development and delivery of innovative academic advising programs and support services

Experience with learning outcomes assessment, academic advising, learning support activities, program development and general education reform

Experience with advising-related technology, specifically BANNER administrative software application and GradesFirst learning management system, as well as other technology

Demonstrated ability to engage in scholarship and grant-writing

Demonstrated success in developing and implementing advising initiatives at colleges or universities

Demonstrated ability to strategically plan, budget, and team-build

Experience with word-processing, spreadsheet, presentation, and database software

Strong supervisory, training and presentation skills

Demonstrated leadership and management in a complex organization

Collaborative style and ability to work closely with University partners to enhance academic advising programs

Excellent written and oral communication and interpersonal skills

Mission-driven, focused, and energetic

Demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, ethnic, and disability backgrounds
