The Executive Director is responsible for providing oversight and coordination of university wide student centered academic advising and support services to undergraduate students. This includes developing and implementing institutional retention initiatives to ensure student success.



Responsible for providing supervision for one or more functions within a department.  Formally plans, assigns, directs, and coordinates the work of these functions.  Typically responsible for performing some non-supervisory duties in addition to supervisory responsibilities.  May perform staff evaluations and make recommendations regarding pay and/or pay performance..



Internal contacts include the Office of the Provost, Deans, Enrollment Management Directors, faculty advisors, undergraduate professional advisors in the schools and colleges, staff and students.  External contacts include representatives of other institutions, associations, and organizations.



Oversee and supervise the academic advising, new student orientation, and related academic support services in the Center for Academic Excellence

Coordinate the development of an annual retention plan focused on institutional needs and goals.

Identifies and pursues external funding opportunities.

Supervise and ensure an effective advisor and staff training program

Assess academic support, student success, and retention initiatives; manage and analyze retention related data.

Keep current on philosophy, trends, and best practices in academic advising and incorporate knowledge into institutional advising programs.

Supervise, guide and develop academic support programming in the Center for Academic Excellence

Ensure faculty and professional advising runs smoothly and effectively in the schools and colleges.

Collaborate with Enrollment Management and Student Affairs to coordinate academic support and retention efforts.

Maintain accurate data for reports and informed decision-making.  Assists with the analysis of enrollment and persistence patterns of students and utilize other relevant data collection and analysis.

Write and submit periodic reports

Chair, co-chair or otherwise serve on Advising and Retention committees, task forces and councils.

Coordinate targeted student success efforts for various cohorts of at-risk students

Perform other duties as assigned


Required Education and Skills

Master’s degree in related field of human development, education, or counseling. (Doctoral degree strongly preferred)

Five to seven years of demonstrated leadership experience in an advising, academic support, or a related department within student services.

Minimum three years of management experience that includes planning, budging, personnel selection, supervision and performance evaluation of staff.

3-5 years teaching experience; preferably in a college or university

Prior administrative experience in a college or university required.

Strong analytical skills including data gathering, analysis, assessment and evaluation and evidence based planning

Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to establish positive working

Position Overview

Primary Purpose of Position The Academic Advisor provides academic advising to freshmen students and eventually freshmen and sophomores. The Academic Advisor will make student referrals to support services in CAE and to other appropriate services on-campus and off-campus; tracks students’ academic progress, curriculum patterns, co-curricular activities, etc.; collaborates with otherCAE staff to design and monitor individualized academic enrichment plans, including supplemental instruction and tutoring, and recruit school/college faculty to participate in CAEand other faculty advising seminars and professional development workshops. This is full-time, twelve-month, EPA non-teaching, non-tenure track position.
Primary Function of Organizational Unit The Center for Academic Excellence (CAE) provides academic support services to help students excel academically and cultivate life skills critical to timely graduation and global citizenship. To accomplish its mission, CAE offers a wide-range of services and programs that promote student success, such as academic advising, supplemental instruction, peer mentoring, tutoring, etc. The unit collaborates with various academic units to reinforce academic expectations and address factors that affect student success and graduation.
Minimum Requirements Master’s degree in counseling, student affairs, higher education administration or other related discipline. Experience coordinating college-level student life programs, with preference for those who have experience providing academic advisement. Basic computer skills, including Microsoft Office and student information systems. Knowledge of student development theories and models. Ability to work independently and manage multiple responsibilities. Ability to supervise and interact with students. Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education Three or more years of working experience in academic advisement, student recruitment, and development of retention strategies in a university environment. Experience with the Student module of the Banner Sungard system.
