MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Must meet the requirements for Chapter 943, Florida Statutes. Must have one year of work experience and a valid driver’s license.

Security Lieutenant (Commissioned)

Job Description
Employees in this class are under general supervision; work performed in supervising all personnel, i.e. sergeants and officers for a particular shift, in general police work; conducting investigations of crimes and accidents, protecting property, facilities, and citizens by law enforcement, and performing related work as required; provides escort service.

  • Performs a variety of duties and supervises a shift which includes one Sergeant and officers
  • Prepares operating shifts and personnel work assignments
  • Transports money and various items from department to Treasurer’s office
  • Assists in approving leave requests
  • Monitors the work performance of employees
  • Patrols and supervises others patrolling by foot or motor vehicle: the campus, dormitory, business office, and recreational facilities
  • Investigates or supervises others investigating suspected crimes, reporting findings, and arresting suspected individuals
  • Investigates accidents involving persons or property, reports probable cause of accidents and pursues appropriate course of action
  • Supervises the maintenance and use of law enforcement equipment
  • Monitors parking operation
  • Performs related and occasionally other duties as assigned:  may direct and control traffic; may issue parking tickets


Required Skills
  • Ability to react quickly and calmly in emergency situations and to determine proper course of action

Required Experience
Graduation from a standard high school or equivalency; at least 3-5 years experience. At least 21 years of age, have a good moral character as determined by investigation. P.O.S.T. certification preferred.

Duties:  Protects life and property at Morgan State University; enforces all rules and regulations set forth by the Morgan State University Board of Regents and the State of Maryland in accordance with the Maryland Annotated Code of Laws; patrols designated areas to identify and report safety hazards, detect violations of laws and ordinances; identify wanted vehicles, persons, and unusual conditions; respond to calls for assistance and emergency service; take action as directed and assist in preliminary and follow-up investigations by interviewing and obtaining statements; assist in collecting and preserving evidence; assist in surveillance and in serving warrants and summons; assists in the apprehension, detention, and processing of violators; performs searches, detains vehicles and persons, and makes arrests when institutional is present; interacts with campus community and establishes rapport with public; operates a variety of communication equipment to obtain, report, and verify information; prepares and completes a variety of detailed reports and forms to support investigations; assists in the preparation of cases; appears and testifies in court; directs traffic; operates and utilizes a variety of law enforcement equipment, e.g., self-defense tools and criminal detection devices; performs other duties, as required.

Minimum Qualifications: High School Diploma or GED; Possession of a valid Maryland Class C or equivalent driver’s license; satisfactory completion of a Maryland Police Academy program and successful completion of a Police Field Training program; certification as a sworn Police Officer recognized by the Maryland Police Training Commission.

Requirements: Knowledge of citizens’ rights and responsibilities; knowledge of federal, state, and local laws and ordinances; skill in detecting situations that imperil public safety; skill in operating emergency vehicles under all conditions; skill in the care and use of firearms, self-defense tools, and criminal detection devices; ability to communicate effectively; ability to operate two way radios and telephones in  a variety of environments; ability to apply knowledge, experience, and reason to arrive at prompt and effective decisions for both routine and critical situations; ability to show sensitivity in interactions with a diverse population; ability to maintain composure and demonstrate restraint in stressful and dangerous situations; ability to lift, drag, and carry heavy objects; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships; ability to follow directions; ability to provide guidance and training to others; ability to respond to emergency situations requiring physical stamina and force; ability to enter and exit vehicles frequently and quickly; ability to work in and wear personal protective equipment; ability to conduct preliminary and follow-up investigations.
