The Clark Atlanta University Board of Trustees and Presidential Search Committee seek its fourth president and invites expressions of interest and applications for the presidency of the only private, independent, graduate research institution in the HBCU community. Formed in 1988 as a result of the consolidation of two independent black institutions–Atlanta University (1865) and Clark College (1869), Clark Atlanta is a regionally accredited, highly rated residential, coeducational, United Methodist Church-related, comprehensive research university. The university campus has 39 academic, administrative, and student support buildings located on 126 acres of land about 1.5 miles from the heart of Metro Atlanta. CAU is one of the five member institutions of the Atlanta University Center (AUC) Consortium, the only Historically Black Consortium of private colleges and universities in the nation.
The university, one of the largest of the 37 member UNCF colleges, offers undergraduate, graduate and professional, and nondegree certificate programs in 38 major areas of study through four academic schools: Arts and Sciences, Business Administration, Education, and Social Work. The highest enrolled undergraduate fields are: Biology, Business Administration, Criminal Justice, Mass Media Arts, and Psychology. CAU facilitates outstanding interdisciplinary and collaborative research initiatives and sponsored programs between the university and national and federal laboratories, other universities, and industry, including small and medium high-tech companies as well as houses world renowned Centers of Excellence in Cancer Research and Therapeutic Development and Functional Nanoscale Materials.
There are 173 full-time faculty members with 79% holding a terminal degree. The student-faculty ratio is 14:1 for an enrollment of 3,458 (2,629 Undergraduate; 829 Graduate) students. The student body is comprised of 74% female and 26% male; 46% in-state, 52% out-of-state, 2% international from 15 foreign countries; and almost 2,500 residential students.
In student life, the campus has 60 chartered student organizations including fraternities and sororities. Eleven intercollegiate athletic men’s and women’s teams compete in the NCAA Division II, Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Total cost to attend per year is $34,599 and approximately $60 million dollars of endowment support financial aid and operations.
The next president will be guided by the University’s focus on becoming a dynamic 21st century research university of choice for a diverse student body that will, as graduates, help improve the quality of life in our global society.
The Board seeks a distinguished, energetic and transformative leader who can accelerate the growing reputation and success of the university. Candidates for the position will need to demonstrate the following:
- Fundraising Experience
- Distinguished and Appropriate Credentials
- Relevant Experience in Higher Education
- Superb Communication Skills
- Strong Community Service, and
- Leadership Abilities Demonstrated at the Education, Local, State, National, International, and Business Levels
