PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:                    

Oversee and supervise the academic advising, new student orientation, and related academic support services in the Center for Academic Excellence

Coordinate the development of an annual retention plan focused on institutional needs and goals.

Identifies and pursues external funding opportunities.

Supervise and ensure an effective advisor and staff training program

Assess academic support, student success, and retention initiatives; manage and analyze retention related data.

Keep current on philosophy, trends, and best practices in academic advising and incorporate knowledge into institutional advising programs.

Supervise, guide and develop academic support programming in the Center for Academic Excellence

Ensure faculty and professional advising runs smoothly and effectively in the schools and colleges.

Collaborate with Enrollment Management and Student Affairs to coordinate academic support and retention efforts.

Maintain accurate data for reports and informed decision-making.  Assists with the analysis of enrollment and persistence patterns of students and utilize other relevant data collection and analysis.

Write and submit periodic reports

Chair, co-chair or otherwise serve on Advising and Retention committees, task forces and councils.

Coordinate targeted student success efforts for various cohorts of at-risk students

Perform other duties as assigned

 

Required Education and Skills

Master’s degree in related field of human development, education, or counseling. (Doctoral degree strongly preferred)

Five to seven years of demonstrated leadership experience in an advising, academic support, or a related department within student services.

Minimum three years of management experience that includes planning, budging, personnel selection, supervision and performance evaluation of staff.

3-5 years teaching experience; preferably in a college or university

Prior administrative experience in a college or university required.

Strong analytical skills including data gathering, analysis, assessment and evaluation and evidence based planning

Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to establish positive working

Job Description The Office of Equity and Inclusion (OEI) is primarily responsible for investigating or otherwise addressing complaints of discrimination, harassment, sexual misconduct, retaliation and nepotism. The OEI provides educational programming on these topics and other equity and diversity-related topics.

The Director of OEI (Director) serves as senior administrator for Tennessee State University. Organizationally, the Director reports to the Vice President for Business and Finance, and works with and reports on specified matters to the President and the University Counsel. The Director also supervises the Office of Disability Services, and manages OEI staff.

The Director supports and coordinates the University’s compliance with federal and state equal opportunity and equity laws, as well as University policies and guidelines on equal opportunity and equity (e.g., Title VI, Title VII, Title IX, Violence Against Women Act and other related state and federal regulations and TSU policy requirements). The Director also affirms the value of diversity through cultivation of mutual respect, acceptance, and understanding, and provides critical leadership and direction to the campus community to support and enhance the University’s commitment to equity and inclusion.

The Director is responsible for investigating protected class complaints and ensuring effective and efficient management and resolution of complaints, which includes performing the following:
Handle the intake of complaints filed with the OEI and assess appropriate resolution process and procedural protocol. Provide consultation and education to students, faculty, and/or staff on discriminatory practices, equity matters, policies, procedures, and options for resolution of complaint matters.

Investigate OEI complaints of discrimination and harassment filed by students, staff, faculty, or visitors in compliance with federal and state laws, executive orders, and University policies and procedures. Process within specific time constraints investigations, analyses, and report findings and conclusions of complaints filed with the OEI.

Ensure effective, efficient, and thorough investigations while ensuring attention to detail and accuracy regarding facts, relevance, and investigation documentation.

Provide information and assistance to the University Counsel in the University Counsel’s handling of and response to complaints involving outside agencies, including the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, Office of Civil Rights, and Tennessee Human Rights Commission.

Conduct training sessions and educational programs for students, faculty, and staff on compliance with applicable federal and state equal opportunity laws, TSU policies governing discrimination, harassment, and equity, and the OEI’s complaint procedures.

The Director also serves as the Title IX Coordinator and leads a team of Deputy Title IX Coordinators in ensuring the institution’s compliance with all aspects of Title IX, including conducting training sessions, investigating Title IX related complaints, overseeing investigations by Deputy Title IX Coordinators, and maintaining required Title IX data.

Performs other duties as assigned by the Vice President for Business and Finance.

Minimum Qualifications/Experience Requires a Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school or a Master’s degree in HR-related field with employment law knowledge.

Minimum of five years of experience investigating equal opportunity related complaints and conducting training sessions, with at least two years of supervisory experience.

Demonstration of progressive leadership experience.

SUMMARY of POSITION

The Executive Assistant to the President relieves the President of administrative details and performs administrative functions that require a thorough knowledge of College policies, procedures, and operations and an understanding of the College’s role within the community. REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  6. Compose correspondence; develop, review and edit presentations and documentation; independently research and analyze associated issues and/or compile materials needed for presentation and/or decision making purposes.
  7. Manage and/or oversee multiple projects concurrently; anticipate and track critical dates, events and organizational issues for the President; follow up with Cabinet Members or other appropriate parties to ensure deadlines are met.
  8. Manages a complex filing system by overseeing the filing system; creates files and records as necessary; updates files and records; determines retention or purge schedules, and retrieves files and documents as needed.
  9. Contributes to the overall success of the college by performing other essential duties and responsibilities as assigned by the President.
  10. Other duties as assigned.
